Family Stories
The Duncan Family
My name is Sandra Duncan. I live with my husband Gene, our seven wonderful children (Jonathan-19, Christin-17, Rachel-15, Sarah-13, David-11, Eli-9, & Emma-7) and Gene's Mother, Mrs. Emma Lee Nimmer on a street named Celebration Drive.
My husband, Gene, and I decided that we would make any sacrifices necessary to allow me to stay home and raise our children, especially since we wanted to Home-Educate. Making the decision to be a one income family, however, severely limited our options for ownership. Knowing what we were up against, our Pastor suggested that we go to the Habitat for Humanity meeting to see if we qualified for ownership. And by the grace of God, we did! First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury signed on to be our sponsors and the work began.
In a day when many people all over the world, and indeed many right here in Salisbury, do not even have a roof over their heads, it is a great blessing to have a warm secure home in the winter, and a cool refreshing haven from the heat in the summer. We have enjoyed our time here, and already have many fond memories. It has truly been a place of Celebration for us. Our many friends (especially the children's) are here often to celebrate bithdays, graduations, and other noteworthy events.
We are grateful to Habitat for Humanity for the "hand up out of a hard place" and for our tightly built, highly celebrated little home on Celebration Drive.
